Overview
A late-1800s sandstone church in Fortitude Valley required a full 3D record prior to a staged renovation. The heritage consultant needed millimetre-accurate geometry of the nave, bell tower, and external facades to inform structural strengthening works and replacement of deteriorated stonework. Interior plaster mouldings and timber trusses were at risk of further damage from water ingress, so the survey had to be non-contact throughout. We positioned 48 scan stations across two levels, capturing every arch, column capital, and window reveal. The resulting point cloud was delivered as a Revit model at LOD 300, with separate families for each heritage element so the architect could design interventions without revisiting the site. Orthographic elevations extracted from the cloud replaced the need for traditional measured drawings, saving the client two weeks of manual survey work.
01 Challenge
Narrow aisles, dim lighting, and fragile plaster surfaces prevented the use of traditional survey methods. Scaffolding was not approved due to heritage constraints.
02 Solution
We used the NavVis MLX in confined spaces where a tripod-mounted scanner footprint was too large. The Trimble X7 HDR imaging ensured accurate colour capture in low-light conditions without supplementary lighting that could generate heat near fragile surfaces.
03 Outcome
The architect received a full Revit model within 10 working days. Stonework replacement quantities were extracted directly from the model, reducing tender pricing uncertainty by 30%. The heritage council accepted the 3D record as the official condition baseline for the renovation permit.
