Point Cloud File Formats Explained: E57, RCP, LAS and More

Every scanning project ends with a file. Choosing the wrong format slows your BIM team, breaks software imports, or loses colour and classification data. This guide explains the formats we deliver and when to use each one.

Scan to BIM LOD Guide: LOD 200 vs LOD 300 Explained

LOD is one of the most misused terms in scan-to-BIM quotes. This guide explains what LOD 200 and LOD 300 actually mean for walls, slabs, MEP, and facades so you scope deliverables your team can use.

How Much Does 3D Laser Scanning Cost in Australia?

Scanning quotes vary widely because scope varies widely. This guide breaks down the variables that move price so you can brief a provider accurately and compare quotes fairly.

LiDAR vs Photogrammetry: Which 3D Survey Method to Use

Use LiDAR when you need direct, millimetre-level geometry in any lighting, including dark plant rooms and detailed interiors. Use photogrammetry when you need colour-rich texture, large open-area aerial coverage, or a lower-cost survey of surfaces a camera can see clearly. Many projects combine both.

Scan to BIM Explained: Workflow, LOD, Costs and When You Need It

Scan to BIM is the process of turning a 3D laser scan of an existing building into an accurate Revit model. You capture reality as a point cloud, register it to survey control, then model walls, floors, structure, and services to an agreed level of detail. Architects and engineers need it whenever they design into an existing building and cannot trust old drawings.

Point Cloud to CAD vs Scan to BIM: Which Deliverable to Order

Order point cloud to CAD when you need flat 2D drawings such as floor plans, elevations, and sections in DWG. Order scan to BIM when you need a 3D parametric model you can design, coordinate, and schedule from in Revit. CAD is cheaper and faster; BIM carries far more data and coordination value.

How Accurate Is 3D Laser Scanning? A Plain-English Guide

A modern terrestrial laser scanner measures individual points to about +/-2 mm at typical building ranges. After multiple scans are registered together and tied to survey control, real-world accuracy across a whole building is usually +/-3 to 5 mm. That comfortably meets BIM LOD 300 and most renovation, structural, and heritage needs.
