Overview

A 9,000 sqm distribution warehouse at Eagle Farm was being reconfigured with new selective racking to increase pallet positions by 40%. The racking supplier needed precise floor flatness data, column grid dimensions, clear heights under every beam, and the location of sprinkler heads, lighting, and roller doors. We scanned the empty warehouse in a single day using an RTC360 on a systematic grid pattern with 10m station spacing. Floor flatness was analysed from the point cloud using a virtual straightedge method, producing an F-number classification for each bay. Column centres were extracted to confirm the 10.8m grid spacing and identify any columns that deviated from the nominal position. Sprinkler head locations were exported as a 3D coordinate list so the racking designer could verify clearance to the nearest head.

01 Challenge

The warehouse had a polished concrete floor with high reflectivity that caused scanner noise near floor level. Several bays had residual racking that partially obstructed sightlines.

02 Solution

Scanner exposure was adjusted to reduce reflectivity artefacts on the polished surface. Residual racking bays were scanned from four directions to capture occluded column faces. Floor flatness analysis used a 3m virtual straightedge at 300mm increments across the full slab.

03 Outcome

The racking designer confirmed that clear height measurements from the scan matched physical checks within 2mm. Two columns were found to be 35mm off the nominal grid, requiring localised racking modifications that were designed before fabrication, avoiding on-site delays.
