Overview
A water treatment plant north of Adelaide was undergoing a capacity upgrade that required accurate as-built records of existing pipe runs, tank geometry, and structural steelwork. Original construction drawings from the 1980s were incomplete and did not reflect two decades of modifications. We scanned 14 process areas including aeration tanks, clarifiers, pump stations, chemical dosing rooms, and the main pipeline gallery. Pipe diameters, flange positions, and valve locations were modelled from the point cloud to produce a piping and instrumentation reference model. Steel structural members were verified against the original framing plans to confirm load paths for new equipment mounts. The client engineering team used the model to route new 600mm diameter process pipes through existing steelwork without clashes, eliminating the need for field surveys during the detailed design phase.
01 Challenge
Active process areas required gas monitoring and confined space entry procedures. Stainless steel surfaces and standing water created high-reflectivity artefacts in the point cloud. Access was restricted to maintenance shutdown windows.
02 Solution
All scanning in process areas was conducted with a safety observer and continuous gas monitoring. Scanner exposure settings were adjusted per station to manage reflectivity from stainless vessels and wet surfaces. Shutdown windows were maximised by pre-planning station locations and minimising setup time.
03 Outcome
The engineering team routed 180m of new process piping through the model with zero clashes identified during construction. The as-built steel verification confirmed three beams with reduced section capacity, allowing the structural engineer to design supplementary bracing before equipment installation rather than discovering the issue on site.
